Majority of young Quebecers back independence: poll
Support for Quebec sovereignty is highest among younger Quebecers, according to a new poll.
The poll by Canadian polling and market research firm CROP surveyed 1,000 respondents found that 56 per cent of those aged 18 to 34 are in favour of independence, the highest level of support of any age group.
Overall, 44 per cent of Quebecers of all ages support sovereignty, while 56 per cent are opposed. Support is higher among francophones, at 50 per cent, compared to 22 per cent among non-francophones.
Regional results show 38 per cent support in the Montreal metropolitan area, 45 per cent in the Quebec City metropolitan area, and 49 per cent in the rest of the province. By age group, 44 per cent of respondents aged 35 to 54 back independence, compared to 37 per cent among those 55 and older.
When asked how they would vote if a referendum were held today, 41 per cent said they would vote or be tempted to vote 'Yes.'
This CROP poll was conducted in July and August. It included 1,000 respondents. It was not commissioned by an outside organization.
